One great thing about Argentina and its wine are the small production and boutique wineries ranging from Salta to Mendoza. Across this beautiful country there are tons of family wineries that produce wines of a high quality. Now is time to get to know all about the Bodega Tukma located in Salta.

They describe themselves as a bodega that “[..] rescues and pays homage to the regions roots with its high altitude wines”. Many people when coming down to the Southern Cone country find it strange that such flavorsome wines aren’t known or even available back home. Of these great wines, It’s no surprise that their product to boast about is the argentine staple: the Malbec.. They also produce the Torrontes, the white wine of Argentina.

Torrontes

The founding partners, Fernando Maurette and Raul Noceto started out with a small vineyard in Huacalera which has now grown out, but still maintains the purpose of producing small amounts of high quality wine. Today, Tukma is an Argentine-Brazilian company.

To get a bit of an example of the low number produced, only 12,000 bottles per year of the Malbec are produced. To put this into perspective, the Frogs Leap winery in Napa Valley, California, produce 100,000 cases on Sauvignon Blanc alone. The Malbec is stainless steel fermented and then aged for eight months in French and American oak barrels.

To get a bit of an idea before you buy, or to help you with the tasting: the accentuating aromas are of black pepper, plums and olives. Maybe we couldn’t go to the extent of calling it the ‘uva mentirosa’ (like we do with the Torrontes), however the wine does surprise on the palate with flavours of roasted meat, plums and a hint of spices. You’ll pick up on the oak, giving a great roundness to the wine.

Malbec

The wines in full that they offer are the Tukna: Malbec Reserva, Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva, Gran Torrontes and the interestingly named 2.670.

A list of the extensive awards they’ve won can be seen to include the ‘Decanter World Wine Awards (2013), International Wine Challenge (2013), Competition “Vino de Jumbo”, Selection Mondial des Vins, Canada, and The Wine Advocate by Robert Parker.
